Inflammation 101 | NTY Blog
You’ve probably heard the word floating around more and more these days when shopping for skincare but what does it really mean? Let’s dive into some of the details to help you navigate what it looks like, how to address it, and the easiest ways to send it packing!
What is inflammation?
Long story short, inflammation is something that happens to your body when something is trying to attack it (viruses, toxins, bad bacteria etc.). It’s essentially your body’s way of addressing it and trying to get rid of it, resulting in something called an inflammatory response. Your immune system kicks into overdrive and sends out cells designed to trap the offenders and begin the healing process.
How do I know if I’m experiencing inflammation?
There’s no one size fits all with inflammation but an easy way to break it down is by what you’re seeing as well as what you’re feeling both on the surface and inside.
- Visible redness and sensitivity
- Hot to the touch
- Dry patches or areas of dehydration
- Blemishes / Acne
- More pronounced aging concerns (fine lines, wrinkles etc.)
- Muscle pains
- Achy joints
- General discomforts or tenderness
It’s important to note that these are considered short-term for most. Inflammation can also be chronic and manifest itself in the form of arthritis, asthma and rash-like conditions like psoriasis and eczema
How can I help deal with my inflammation?
There are a few ways to go about dealing with inflammation but it’s important to note that for chronic concerns it’s always best to consult with a medical professional if a treatment plan would be more beneficial. In the case of topical products however (aka our skincare products), there are some amazing ingredients to be on the lookout for to help soothe some of the concerns listed above.
CBD – derived from the Cannabis Sativa Plant, it helps soothe signs of inflammation on the surface and below but you need to make sure it’s full-spectrum for maximum CBDa benefits but more on that later….
Niacinamide – aka vitamin B3 helps a compromised skin barrier which can improve the signs of inflammation like redness and blemishes
Antioxidants – broad category we know but the more antioxidants like Vitamin C, CoQ10, supercharged botanical oils, etc. you can include in your routine, the more defense you have from environmental stressors that cause inflammatory responses
Fatty Acids – ceramides, lipids, omegas etc. These help nourish compromised skin and get it back to a place where it can better function without the added stress. Some of our favorites include Cocoa Butter, Almond Oil and yes, CBD.
How does CBDa help inflammation?
CBDa is one of the many cannabinoids found in the Cannabis Sativa Plant and is regarded as one of the most potent anti-inflammatory ingredients around. CBDa is so potent that it’s appeared as a major cancer cell inhibitor in breast cancer treatment trials (yes, cancer is a form of chronic inflammation!), and some studies suggest that it can outperform CBD by 1,000x when it comes to specific benefits!
The human body has something called the endocannabinoid system, a huge network of receptors that runs throughout the brain and your entire body. The main function of the “ECS” is to help regulate a multitude of processes like metabolism, memory, stress and yes, even response to inflammation.
While CBDa doesn’t bind directly to CB1 receptors (aka cannabinoid receptors) like THC does to give you that euphoric feeling, it still plays nicely with the overall endocannabinoid system. Instead, it focuses on and acts as an inhibitor to a particular enzyme known as COX-2 - a major culprit when it comes to inflammation. Hello, anti-inflammatory benefits!
Fun fact: The process in which it’s extracted is pretty complex and expensive, which is why you don’t see it highlighted or marketed as often as CBD in other skincare or body care products. At NTY though, we don’t settle for anything less than the best!
