While often used interchangeably, moisture and hydration are actually different! The good news, however, is that it’s easy to get both into your daily CBD skincare routine – no overthinking required.
What’s the main difference?
Let’s make it easy! The difference is as simple as saying oil and water.
Moisture = oil content
Hydration = water content
In order to have happy, healthy-looking skin it’s important to get a combination of both. Our bodies are made up of over 50% water and that includes our skin cells. To function at our best, we need to drink water to avoid dehydration, right? Same thing goes for skin cells – in order to have your skin looking plump, fresh and nourished, topical hydration is a must.
On the surface (literally), skin’s main job is to keep the good stuff in and the bad stuff out. That good stuff includes water content. Could you imagine if all the water in our bodies was able to escape and evaporate?! Yikes. Fortunately, our skin is comprised of fats, cholesterol, lipids and you guessed it, oils designed to nourish and keep skin’s top layer intact and on defense mode.
By having a solid combination of both moisture and hydration, you’re avoiding the visible signs of compromised skin like inflammation, dry patches and irritability while helping skin better protect you from environmental stressors and infection.
Dry vs Dehydrated Skin
Dry Skin: you’re in need of some moisture! When your skin is lacking that oil content we discussed earlier, you start to see dry patches and flakiness. The very top layer of our skin is called the Stratum Corneum and it’s made up of dead skin cells. We already know what dead skin cells look like when we need to exfoliate, so imagine how your complexion will look if you’re not moisturizing properly.
Dehydrated Skin: hydration time! The tell-tale sign of dehydrated skin is in how it feels. Tightness, a feeling of “stretching” and irritability are the most common side effects. Think of how a grape turns into a raisin when it’s dehydrated. The same goes for our skin cells. On the surface, you’re likely going to see redness and fine lines and wrinkles start to appear more visible, so plump that skin back up with some solid hydrators.
